4-H Building Workshop 12/8/2008 : CIA presented a workshop for nine members of Champaign County 4-H and their parents on Monday, December 8, 2008. We made a presentation on model rocketry and the club, and helped each student build an Estes Generic E2X rocket, which they can decorate with stickers and markers and fly at an upcoming CIA launch.

CPD Demo and Illinois Aerospace Institute Launch 7/18/2008 : The third Friday in July is launch day for the Illinois Aerospace Institute, a summer aviation and space careers camp for high school students sponsored by the University of Illinois Department of Aerospace Engineering. CIA assists the campers in building and flying their rockets, both D-motor-powered payloaders carrying an altimeter and a raw egg, and rocket-boosted gliders. Each camper has the opportunity to make two flights with each rocket. This year, we also scheduled a demonstration launch for members of the Champaign Park District's summer day camp on the morning of the same day. It made for a long, hot and tiring day at the Dodds Park launch site, but there were some great -- and some not-so-great -- flights.

Chanute Aerospace Museum Workshop 6/10/2008 : We again led a build-and-fly activity at the Chanute Aerospace Museum's summer aeronautics camp on June 10, 2008. Campers built and flew Estes Alpha III rockets with A8-3 and B6-4 motors. After building the rockets in the museum classroom, we went outside on the airport grounds near the museum's aircraft collection to launch the models. Due to a shortage of hands we didn't get any pictures of the flying this year, but the weather was nice and it went very well.

CPD Building Workshop 5/10/2008 : On May 10, the CIA held its annual "build'n'fly" workshop for beginning rocketeers (ages 8 - 12) in cooperation with the Champaign Park District at the Leonhard Recreation Center. We had to cancel the "fly" part of the activity, which is scheduled to coincide with a regular Saturday afternoon club launch, because of high winds. Several of the participants did get a chance to fly their rockets at other CIA club launches later in the summer. As usual, the participants built Estes Alpha IIIs with help from their parents and CIA members Jonathan Sivier, Greg Smith, Chris Deem and Lon Westfall. Each one also received two motors, an "A" and a "B," plus igniters and recovery wadding to fly them with.

AE100SD Launch at Flatville 11/3/2007 : For the third time, CIA assisted students in the University of Illinois' Aerospace Engineering 100SD class as they launched their semester project rockets at the CIA's site near Flatville on Saturday, November 3. The rockets were modified BSD 38 Special kits powered by Aerotech J350-L motors. The class built the payloads, consisting of an RDAS on-board data recorder and telemetry system with GPS, and either a still or video camera to take pictures during the flights. They will download and analyze the data from these flights to complete their semester projects. CIA assisted in the design and construction of the rockets and payloads, and ran the launch operation.

Chanute Air Festival 8/11/2007 : Central Illinois Aerospace performed a demonstration rocket launch as one of the opening acts at the 2007 Chanute Air Festival in Rantoul, Illinois on August 11 and 12, 2007. An unfavorable wind direction forced us to shorten the demonstration after only four impressive and successful flights on Saturday, and grounded our Sunday performance altogether, but we stayed for the remainder of the festival and airshow to meet potential members, hand out literature and talk rockets. There were also some excellent vintage aircraft on display and in performance during the airshow.
