On May 10, the CIA held its annual "build'n'fly" workshop for beginning rocketeers (ages 8 - 12) in cooperation with the Champaign Park District at the Leonhard Recreation Center. We had to cancel the "fly" part of the activity, which is scheduled to coincide with a regular Saturday afternoon club launch, because of high winds. Several of the participants did get a chance to fly their rockets at other CIA club launches later in the summer. As usual, the participants built Estes Alpha IIIs with help from their parents and CIA members Jonathan Sivier, Greg Smith, Chris Deem and Lon Westfall. Each one also received two motors, an "A" and a "B," plus igniters and recovery wadding to fly them with.
One of the hardest lessons is figuring out exactly how much glue to use in each step. Attaching the shock cord mount takes a good amount. Photo by Greg Smith
